Eximius Energy on UK nuclear skills shortage

$
0
0

By Ben Smith, Team Leader, Eximius Energy Nuclear Practice

The nuclear new build projects due for the UK are an exciting prospect for the industry. Developers EDF Energy NNB GenCo, Horizon Nuclear Power and NuGen are at differing stages of progressing a new generation of nuclear power fleets across a number of UK locations.

The prospect of a UK renaissance in nuclear power is close, however notable project blockers have included significant delays with template projects in Europe, investment decisions, generation strike price agreements, questions over reactor assessments and a more recent EU legal objection from the Austrian government, to name but a few.

UK wide projects promise to guarantee tens of thousands of jobs, across the lifecycle of the build stage and into operational stages, but the challenge faced is where to find this core workforce? In a post Fukushima landscape, perceptions of the nuclear industry remain positive within the engineering domain, particularly with a stronger than ever push to achieve clean energy targets, however entrants into the industry must be consistently high.

Danny Roderick, chief executive of Westinghouse, a major shareholder within NuGen, sums up the concern at the apparent poised position in which the industry finds itself, when addressing the skills shortage:

“I’m concerned in general about the volume of UK engineers already. Not the technical competency just the amount. We already see tremendous competition for the resources that are here.” He added that the whole sector “needs to wake up” to the impending lack of engineers. “This is going to be a real problem that will lead to us having to go outside the country to get engineering support, which would be a real shame.”

Roderick commented: “Shortages are going to happen because when [the] Hinkley [nuclear project] breaks lose they are going to hire hundreds of people all at once, that will go up to thousands, then we will hire hundreds then thousands [as well].”

Reference: Building.co.uk http://ubm.io/XaPubE

From Eximius’ perspective, we consistently work to identify the ‘passive’ workforce of technical talent from safety critical industries such as defence, pharmaceutical and chemical, as well as working with the existing nuclear skill base in the UK. We are also supporting ongoing European and Worldwide nuclear plant construction projects. While developing our own talent base to re-deploy both the talent and our own positive experience into UK projects, clearance permitting.

To ensure UK projects start confidently and reach completion, recruiters and client companies must remain dynamic when attracting and notably retaining talent in the industry. A challenging time ahead but excitement certainly remains.
